“300 Years On: A Dance Collection from the Reign of Louis XIV”

The historic origins of ballet are well-documented in textbooks, museums, literary and performance journals and on film and television. But we hardly ever get a chance to see a live performance of early choreography – there’s just not enough current companies who seek to interpret and re-stage court dances of the 1600 and 1700s. This made last night’s production of “300 Years On: A Dance Collection from the Reign of Louis XIV” such a rare delight. Here was Baroque music (performed by Musica Pacifica) combined with a number of that same period’s set dances (passepied, sarabande, gigue, rigaudon, etc.). For a couple of hours, the audience was transported back in time and journeyed to a place of opulence, sophistication and placed movement.

Throughout the evening, Musica Pacifica switched back and forth between solo pieces and dance accompaniment, each work demonstrating their unique Baroque sound.
The Moravian Music Foundation archive in Bethlehem and Winston-Salem catalogue thousands of musical works, for use in religious services and also for playing at home and in the Collegia Musica that were part of the settlements’ social life into the 19th century. Some of this music was composed by Moravian musicians themselves and some collected or copied from European sources. This program highlights Haydn Quartets performed from copies of handwritten parts or early editions brought by Moravian musicians to America in the 18th century. A talk and an exhibition on the history and influence of the Moravian communities in America accompany the concert.

He was very specific in his orchestration featuring flute, viol and chamber organ together. Contemporary controversy pitted French against Italian for supremacy of musical style; the melding of the two styles in his work illustrates his musical world view.
This is followed by Jacques Duphly’s suite in A from the first book of his Pieces de Clavecin, published in 1744.
The instrument, after the c. 1749 Jean-Claude Goujon, is Daly’s only 18th-century French double, made in 1984. It has recently enjoyed a complete interior redecoration by San Francisco artist Adrian Card, new jacks, real quill, and the first “iron” harpsichord wire in our time based upon analyses of surviving historical samples.
The Otherworldly Fiddler: the sacred and the profane meet at Heinrich Biber’s musical table

Perhaps the greatest violin virtuoso of the 17th century, Bohemian fiddler Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber crafted his compositions in a style that might be described as a dinner party of disparate sound worlds. His scrumptious Mensa Sonora, seu Musica instrumentalis, is “civilized” Biber, for mealtime and after dinner entertainment. His virtuosic Harmonia artificioso-ariosa employs a rustic folk-fiddle style and demands alternate tunings and techniques. Agave Baroque performs selections from these fascinating collections, as well as works that fearlessly explore the nexus of sacred and profane: Biber’s 1682 masterpiece Fidicinium sacro-profanum, and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer’s stunning Sacro-profanus concentus musicus.

The poem is plainly about earthly love, but its sensuous language and imagery have been traditionally interpreted by Jewish and Christian religious exegetes as allegory. This program sets the sensuous verses of “Song of Songs” (translated from the original Hebrew into Latin by St Jerome) beside love songs in Spanish, inviting the listener to consider the many meanings and varieties of love and the complex relationship of the divine and the human, now and in the past. The four-part Taedet animam meamcomes from the Offices of Lauds and Matins. The setting of the Mass is scored for six-part choir.
The Gibbons “Cries” is also an “In Nomine”, based on the plainsong that inspired dozens of instrumental pieces. The program will also include the original Taverner mass movement, an In Nomine by Tye based on street cries, another (instrumental) In Nomine by Gibbons and a contemporary ballad about a scheming cookmaid, several tailors and a sausage.
The Vinaccesi Ensemble was formed in 2008 by Bruce Wetmore, Kindra Scharich, and Nanette McGuinness and first performed as part of the 2008 Berkeley Early Music Fringe Fest. The Ensemble recorded Vinaccesi\’s extant solo cantatas in 2011, with the generous support of the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music\’s Musical Grant Program. View Sample Programs >>>
Loving the Bach suites, she wanted to know if there was other solo music before and around Bach’s time, but from where the first musicians called cellists composed, in Italy! It turns out that between the 1670s to 1750s cellists Gabrielli, Vitali, Dall’Abaco, Supriani, and others, wrote great solo music. Elinor’s program encompasses an exceptional collection of music that is charming, sumptuous, and captivating.
beauty and musical richness, we’ll sing other charming pieces by Power, his colleague John Dunstable (ca. 1380-1453), their contemporary Johannes Ciconia (ca. 1373-1412), and gems by Philippe de Vitry, Guillaume de Machaut and Johannes Ockeghem in a fine medieval chamber, the Member’s Lounge of Julia Morgan’s Berkeley City Club.

Full moon presides over exsanguinous tales.

Last night, local early music ensemble Cançonièr performed in what was their last appearance until next year. In the somewhat noisy parish hall of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church this four member ensemble played a slightly condensed version of a program they have been touring for the last year or so. It was a program called ‘Black Dragon’ with music from the first half of the 15th century, the time of the reign of Count Vlad Dracula, the historical antecedent of the vampire character.

Cançonièr is a four member ensemble co-directed by Tim Rayborn and Annette Bauer. The other two regulars are Shira Kammen and Phoebe Jevtovic. All are amazing instrumentalists and scholars in their own right and all play in other ensembles and groupings. READ MORE >>

Historical Treats at Berkeley Festival

This year’s Festival programming shows that interest in historical performance practice extends to music before and after medieval/Renaissance/Baroque, and beyond the confines of Europe.

The opening concert, Sunday at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, was a recital by soprano Dominique Labelle, accompanied by Nicholas McGegan on fortepiano, Elizabeth Blumenstock on violin, and Phoebe Carrai on cello, all playing about a fourth of a step between Baroque and modern pitch.
