Les grâces
Gracest Hits
To celebrate our 4th anniversary and the release of our first professionally-recorded CD (MSR Classics), Les grâces invites you to an afternoon of some of our favorite music (so far). Be thrilled by Handel, moved by Couperin and Marais, enlivened by Purcell, and seduced by Montéclair–and others. We’ll even introduce you to a new favorite that was hiding in a dusty library until very recently: a lovely “butterfly” air by Battistin, never before heard on the West Coast!

Les Distraits
A Parisian Palindrome
Paris has served variously as home, source of patronage, and inspiration to countless composers and performers.  We have chosen some of our favorite music associated with City of Light: two of Telemann’s enormously popular  “Paris” Quartets to bookend the program, one of Rameau’s brilliant “Pièces de clavecin en concerts” at the center, and two duos, one of d’Hervelois, one of Boismortier, placed to complete the programming palindrome. Although the Italian and French tastes had been, at least theoretically, reconciled to each other by the time these pieces were written, the pieces on our program are mostly very, very French in taste -  Francophiles, this program is for you!
LES DISTRAITS: Stephen Schultz, baroque flute; Elizabeth Blumenstock, baroque violin; Josh Lee, viola da gamba; Roy Whelden, viola da gamba; Katherine Heater, harpsichord

Elinor Frey, Solo Baroque Cello
The Voice of the Violoncello – Music of the First Great Composer-Cellists of Italy
Montreal-based cellist Elinor Frey developed the program “The Voice of the Violoncello” while doing a Fulbright Fellowship in Italy. Loving the Bach suites, she wanted to know if there was other solo music before and around Bach’s time, but from where the first musicians called cellists composed, in Italy! It turns out that between the 1670s to 1750s cellists Gabrielli, Vitali, Dall’Abaco, Supriani, and others, wrote great solo music. Elinor’s program encompasses an exceptional collection of music that is charming, sumptuous, and captivating.

Coro Ciconia
The Transit of Venus
Coro Ciconia continues exploring the transition in music from medieval to Renaissance, examining the literal crossover of English technique and sound to the continent accompanying England’s conquest of France at Agincourt in 1415.  European musicians called this sound the “contenance l’Angloise;” it transformed western music.  Featuring “Missa Alma Redemptoris Mater,” by Leonel Power (ca. 1375-1445), chosen purely for
beauty and musical richness, we’ll sing other charming pieces by Power, his colleague John Dunstable (ca. 1380-1453), their contemporary Johannes Ciconia (ca. 1373-1412), and gems by Philippe de Vitry, Guillaume de Machaut and Johannes Ockeghem in a fine medieval chamber, the Member’s Lounge of Julia Morgan’s Berkeley City Club.

The Barefoot All-Stars
“Cries and In Nomines”: Elizabethan Festive Music
“The Cries of London” by Gibbons and “The Country Cries” by Deering are the famous (and hilarious) pieces that anchor this program.   Gibbons’ piece rings with the sounds of street food sellers and merchants (“ripe damsons ripe/ hot puddings, hot / have ye any work for a cooper?” etc), while the Deering piece, largely in dialect, reflects a more rural discourse (“Her’ll fling her pisspot on her head, for her play’d all night at whipperginnie”).
The Gibbons “Cries” is also an “In Nomine”, based on the plainsong that inspired dozens of instrumental pieces.  The program will also include the original Taverner mass movement, an In Nomine by Tye based on street cries, another (instrumental) In Nomine by Gibbons and a contemporary ballad about a scheming cookmaid, several tailors and a sausage.

Flauti Diversi
Boismortier! The Complete Opus 37 Trio Sonatas
Flauti Diversi presents a program of the complete trio sonatas from Joseph Bodin de Boismortier’s Opus 37 (1732), a Parisian collection of charming works displaying Boismortier’s unique style of composition, which was an amalgam combining French elegance with fiery Italian figuration in the Allegros and Vivaces and aria-like melodies in the Largos and Adagios. He was very specific in his orchestration featuring flute, viol and chamber organ together. Contemporary controversy pitted French against Italian for supremacy of musical style; the melding of the two styles in his work illustrates his musical world view.

The instrument, after the c. 1749 Jean-Claude Goujon, is Daly’s only 18th-century French double, made in 1984. It has recently enjoyed a complete interior redecoration by San Francisco artist Adrian Card, new jacks, real quill, and the first “iron” harpsichord wire in our time based upon analyses of surviving historical samples.

Eugene Petrushansky, solo harpsichord
South by Northwest: Bach’s Continental Influences
Though J.S. Bach likely never travelled outside Eastern Germany, his œuvre incorporated two Continental elements: the Italian virtuoso style (“South”) and the French clavecinistic school (“Northwest”). The amalgamation of these elements into the musical heritage of the great Germanic lineage of Sweelinck defined the genius widely considered to be the culmination of the Baroque paradigm. Eugene Petrushansky performs Bach’s toccatas and suites in a compendium of diverse styles, on two harpsichords (double-manual after 1738 Vater and single-manual after early 17th-century Italian examples).

  1. I need to see this calendar to plan a possible fringe concert myself. The old page showing this information has disappeared as this new site is obviously under construction. Can you get me that information? None of the dates above are active links to anything.

    • Hi Owen;

We should have active links up and running early next week (earlier if possible). Please check back for an update. See you at the festival!

  3. Looking for a recommendation for a venue as close to St Marks and First Congregational with reasonable price. Our group will be 6 singers and 9 instrumentalists. Hence we need some space for the stage. St Joe (of A) is too small unfortunately.

    Hi,
For the Fringe events, can we purchase tickets in advance? Or, is it “at the door”?
    Thanks
    David

  5. still can’t read any of this on a UC Berkeley Library computer. Who’s
bright idea is dark grey lettering on a black background?

    • Hello Peter,
I am sorry about your browser reading the backgound as black. The background as I see it and work on it is in white. I can’t imagine why you are having this problem.

Once again, several days will have to choose between concurrent potentially great concerts… what a happy problem. Really looking forward to this wonderful week!!!

Will there be any masterclasses this year? They’re always my favorite part of the festival, and the hardest to find out about.

  9. Could you provide the calendar in a downloadable form, like pdf or Word? It will be much easier to track changes as the calendar expands, create my own custom calendar, etc., if there was a version I could manipulate that way.
